PRESS RELEASE
STAMFORD HOSPITAL APPROVED TO PERFORM OPEN HEART SURGERY & ELECTIVE ANGIOPLASTY.
STAMFORD, CT / January 4, 2006
The State of Connecticut Office of Health Care Access (OHCA) has approved Stamford Hospital’s request to perform open heart surgery and elective angioplasty. Residents of lower Fairfield County will now have access to a full service cardiac program.
With the approval, Stamford Hospital will build one of the highest quality programs in the region with its partner New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System, one of the world’s leaders in cardiac care. In addition, a full service cardiac care program in lower Fairfield County will provide access to the underserved members of our population who cannot currently obtain the services they need as easily and readily.
“We are extremely grateful that the State Office of Health Care Access recognized the need for a full service cardiology program for residents of lower Fairfield County since Stamford is Connecticut’s only growing city with a population of 100,000 plus residents,” said Brian Grissler, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stamford Hospital. “I want to take this opportunity to thank the more than 12,000 community leaders and members for their active support of our application.”
The addition of open heart surgery and elective angioplasty at Stamford Hospital will complete the array of cardiology services already available to patients from prevention to rehabilitation. Thanks to public support, Stamford Hospital was approved in 2004 to perform emergency angioplasty, the most effective treatment for some forms of a heart attack. In addition, cardiac patients will be treated in the hospital’s nationally recognized critical care unit and the new 32-bed cardiac care unit, which will open later this year.
Stamford Hospital is a not-for-profit provider of comprehensive healthcare services in lower Fairfield County. The mission of Stamford Hospital is to provide, together with its physicians, a broad range of high quality health and wellness services focused on the needs of our communities. Stamford Hospital is affiliated with the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and is a major teaching affiliate of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. In addition, Stamford is a Magnet Hospital, and a member of the Planetree Alliance, a group of hospitals nationwide focused on patient-centered care.
